Nairobi has become the center of a critical conversation on technology and human rights as it hosts the 7th Inclusive Africa Conference (IAC 2026). The event brings together a powerful coalition of governments, innovators, development partners, and civil society organizations, all focused on a singular goal: driving concrete action on digital accessibility and the inclusive application of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Organized by inABLE in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, the conference addresses a pressing systemic challenge. With approximately 80 million persons with disabilities across Africa, there is an urgent need to ensure these individuals are not marginalized as the continent's digital economy undergoes rapid expansion.
Irene Mbari-Kirika, founder and executive director of inABLE, set a provocative tone for the discussions, challenging attendees to rethink the trajectory of technological growth. "Are we building a digital economy that truly serves everyone, or are we leaving over 80 million Africans with disabilities behind?" she asked, emphasizing that innovation is only successful if it is inclusive.
A significant portion of the dialogue centered on the continent's current dependence on imported assistive technologies. Mbari-Kirika called for a strategic shift toward local solutions, arguing that Africa must pair global innovation with domestic manufacturing. According to her, this approach would not only improve accessibility but also stimulate job creation and grow the internal market.
Beyond hardware and software, the conference highlighted the necessity of early intervention in education. Mbari-Kirika noted that skills development must begin well before the end of formal schooling, asserting that "preparation that starts after graduation is already too late."
As Africa continues to establish itself as a hub for digital transformation, the outcomes of IAC 2026 serve as a blueprint for how AI and digital tools can be leveraged to create a more equitable society where accessibility is a right, not a privilege.
