Tensions have surged following a deadly strike on a college in Starobelsk, situated in the Luhansk region, sparking a fresh wave of accusations between Moscow and Kyiv.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated on Friday that Ukraine bears full responsibility for the escalation of the conflict. According to Russian officials, the attack not only resulted in civilian casualties but also significantly undermined ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the crisis.
Vassily Nebenzia, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, voiced strong condemnation, asserting that the strike "vividly confirms the treachery and unreliability" of Kyiv as a partner in negotiations. Moscow maintains that the nature of the strike indicates it was a deliberate act rather than an accidental hit.
Reports citing the Luhansk regional chief indicate a grim toll from the attack, with ten people confirmed dead and more than 40 others injured. The event has cast a shadow over the region, highlighting the continued volatility of the frontline areas.
In response, the Ukrainian military has rejected the accusations. Kyiv maintains that its forces were targeting a high-level Russian drone operations unit operating within the area. Ukrainian officials further asserted that their military operations are conducted in strict compliance with international humanitarian law.
As both sides trade blame, the international community continues to monitor the situation, with the Starobelsk incident serving as a stark reminder of the challenges facing any potential diplomatic breakthrough in the region.
