UN Celebrates International Tea Day Highlighting Chinese Tea Culture

The United Nations headquarters in New York was filled with the aromatic essence of one of the world's most beloved beverages yesterday, May 21, as diplomats and officials gathered to celebrate International Tea Day.

The event, which drew more than 200 guests, including UN officials and diplomats, was hosted by the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Zhejiang province. The gathering served as a vibrant platform for attendees to explore the depths of Chinese tea culture, tasting a variety of brews that represent centuries of tradition from the Chinese mainland.

Beyond the tasting experience, guests praised tea as a powerful symbol of cultural exchange, sustainability, and shared development. The event underscored how a simple beverage can foster diplomatic ties and promote a collective commitment to sustainable agricultural practices across the globe.

International Tea Day was officially designated on May 21 following a resolution adopted during the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly in 2019. Since its inception, the day has aimed to raise awareness of the importance of tea for economic development and the well-being of tea producers worldwide, bridging the gap between tradition and modern sustainability goals.
