DR Congo Shifts World Cup Training to Belgium Amid Ebola Concerns

Sporting Dreams Amid a Health Crisis

The Democratic Republic of Congo's national football team has made a critical adjustment to its preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. In a move prioritizing player safety and health, the team has cancelled a planned training camp in Kinshasa, shifting the focus to Belgium.

The Ebola Outbreak

The decision comes as the country grapples with a recent Ebola outbreak declared in eastern DR Congo. According to health authorities, the highly contagious haemorrhagic fever is suspected to have caused 139 deaths from approximately 600 probable cases. While team officials did not explicitly link the location change to the virus, the decision to move the three-day camp and the exclusion of locally based players from the national squad highlight the severity of the situation.

A Historic World Cup Journey

This tournament marks only the second time DR Congo has qualified for the FIFA World Cup, the first being in 1974 when the nation competed as Zaire. The upcoming event, hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, represents a significant milestone for the team.

The Congolese side will be based in Houston for the start of their Group K campaign. Their schedule is demanding, opening against Portugal on June 17, followed by a match against Colombia in Guadalajara on June 24, and concluding the group stage against Uzbekistan in Atlanta on June 28.

Navigating Travel Restrictions

The outbreak initially sparked concerns regarding the team's ability to enter the host nations. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had imposed restrictions on non-Americans who had recently visited DR Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan.

However, a US official confirmed on Tuesday that the team would still be permitted to participate. Because the squad has been training in Europe, they may not fall under the strictest travel bans. Even for those who have recently been in the country, the US will implement enhanced health screening measures to ensure the safety of all participants and spectators.
