Venice Art Biennale 2026 Celebrates Legacy of Pioneer Curator Koyo Kouoh

The 61st Venice Art Biennale has officially opened its doors to the public, marking a significant moment for the global art community. This year's event serves as both a showcase of cutting-edge contemporary art and a poignant tribute to the groundbreaking curator Koyo Kouoh.

Kouoh made history as the first African woman appointed to curate the prestigious international exhibition. Following her passing last year, organizers have ensured that her vision of inclusion, diversity, and cross-cultural dialogue continues to shape the trajectory of this year's Biennale.

Titled "In Minor Keys," the exhibition was meticulously designed to provide a platform and a voice for marginalized communities. The theme reflects Kouoh's lifelong dedication to challenging traditional artistic narratives and expanding the boundaries of global representation.

Born in Cameroon and raised in Switzerland, Kouoh's path to the art world was unconventional; she initially worked as an investment banker before emerging as one of the most influential figures in contemporary African art. Her leadership was further cemented in Senegal, where she founded the Raw Material Company arts center, and later in Cape Town, where she served as the director of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa.

Her appointment to lead the Venice Biennale was widely recognized as a landmark moment for African representation in the global art scene. As visitors explore the exhibition this May, the 61st Biennale stands as a powerful testament to Kouoh's enduring impact and her commitment to fostering a more inclusive artistic landscape.
