Residents in Myanmar's commercial hub, Yangon, experienced strong tremors on Monday morning following a moderate earthquake that struck near the country's south coast.
The seismic event occurred at approximately 8:35 a.m. local time on May 18, 2026. According to data from Myanmar's Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, the quake registered a magnitude of 5.2. The epicenter was pinpointed at 16.51 degrees north latitude and 96.34 degrees east longitude—roughly 14.5 km south of Kyauktan township—with a focal depth of 40 km.
Providing a slightly different reading, the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences reported the earthquake at 02:05 GMT, estimating the magnitude at 5.3.
Despite the strength of the tremors felt in urban centers, the situation remains stable. As of now, there have been no reports of casualties or significant property damage, providing relief to the local communities and businesses in the region.
