Africa CDC Confirms Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo’s Ituri Province

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has officially confirmed an outbreak of Ebola virus disease in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The announcement comes as health authorities work urgently to contain the spread in a region characterized by high population mobility.

Urgent Regional Response

In response to the crisis, the Africa CDC is convening an urgent meeting with representatives from the DR Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan, alongside global health partners. The primary objective is to strengthen cross-border surveillance and enhance preparedness and response efforts to prevent the virus from crossing national boundaries.

Current Toll and Viral Strain

Reports indicate that approximately 246 suspected cases have been identified, with 65 deaths recorded. The majority of these cases are concentrated in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones, including four deaths among laboratory-confirmed cases.

Preliminary findings suggest that the outbreak involves a non-Zaire strain of the virus. Genomic sequencing is currently ongoing to further characterize the strain and determine the most effective medical response.

High-Risk Factors

The Africa CDC has expressed significant concern regarding the risk of further spread. Critical vulnerabilities include the urban settings of Bunia and Rwampara, combined with intense population movement and mobility linked to mining activities in Mongwalu.

Ebola virus disease is a severe and often fatal illness transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected persons, contaminated materials, or individuals who have died from the disease.
