A health crisis has unfolded in the Atlantic Ocean as a suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius has resulted in three deaths and several illnesses, prompting an urgent international response.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), two cases of hantavirus have been officially confirmed. The outbreak has left one passenger seriously ill and three others reporting mild symptoms, casting a shadow over the voyage.
The WHO provided an update on Tuesday, noting that the origin of the infection remains under investigation. Experts suggest that victims may have been infected prior to boarding the vessel. However, the organization emphasized that human-to-human transmission on board cannot be ruled out at this stage.
Currently, the situation is being managed through a coordinated international effort. Evacuation plans for the vessel are underway to ensure the safety of all remaining passengers and crew members as health officials work to contain the spread of the virus.
