Two US-flagged merchant vessels successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, marking a cautious but hopeful step for global maritime commerce in a region often fraught with tension.
The passage was supported by US Navy guided-missile destroyers operating in the Arabian Gulf, part of an initiative dubbed Project Freedom. According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation aims to restore safe transit for commercial shipping through one of the world's busiest oil chokepoints.
"American forces are actively assisting efforts to restore transit for commercial shipping. As a first step, 2 US-flagged merchant vessels have successfully transited through the Strait of Hormuz and are safely headed on their journey," CENTCOM said in a post on X.
The movement underscores ongoing diplomatic and security efforts to keep trade routes open, a priority for businesses and economies worldwide. Maritime analysts note that any reduction in shipping disruptions can have positive ripple effects on global supply chains.
