Iran Claims Missile Strike on US Frigate in Strait of Hormuz; US Denies Incident

Tensions flared again in the strategic Strait of Hormuz after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy reported that its forces had struck a US Navy frigate that attempted to pass through the waterway on Monday.

According to the semi‑official Fars news agency, the IRGC fired two missiles at the US vessel after it ignored repeated warnings from Iranian naval units. The agency cited local sources as saying the frigate, which had set sail near Iran’s southern port city of Jask, was hit and subsequently forced to retreat from the area.

US Central Command quickly issued a statement denying any strike on its vessels. “US forces are supporting Project Freedom and enforcing the naval blockade on Iranian ports,” the command said, emphasizing that no US Navy ships had been hit.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s busiest oil shipping lanes, and any incident involving naval vessels there attracts heightened regional and global attention. While the conflicting accounts remain unresolved, the episode underscores ongoing maritime tensions in the Gulf.

Observers note that the incident follows a series of confrontations in the region, with both sides exchanging warnings over the movement of naval assets. As of now, no casualties have been reported, and international monitors are keeping a close watch on developments.
