ROK Counsel Seeks 30-Year Jail Term for Ex-President Yoon

In a dramatic legal development, special counsel Cho Eun-suk on Friday, April 24, 2026, sought a 30-year prison sentence for former President Yoon Suk-yeol of the Republic of Korea (ROK) on charges of general treason.

The case centers on allegations that Yoon ordered a drone infiltration into the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) around October 2024. Prosecutors claim the operation was intended to militarily provoke the DPRK, creating a pretext for declaring emergency martial law in December of that year.

The special prosecutor team argued that the drone operation severely compromised the ROK's military interests. They stated that a crash led to leaks of classified information about military operations and assets, which heightened tensions between the ROK and the DPRK.

Former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun faces a requested 25-year sentence in the same case. Yoon and Kim were indicted in November 2025 on general treason charges alongside a former counterintelligence commander.

Yoon declared emergency martial law on December 3, 2024, but the National Assembly revoked it hours later. He was arrested and indicted in January 2025, becoming the first sitting president in ROK history to face such legal action.

This high-profile trial underscores the ongoing complexities in inter-Korean relations and the legal accountability of top officials.
