US-Iran Tensions Stall Ceasefire Prospects in 2026

U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated Wednesday that there is "no time frame" for resolving the ongoing military conflict with Iran, now entering its eighth week. The remarks came as Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf outlined strict preconditions for a comprehensive ceasefire, including lifting maritime blockades and halting Israeli military operations.

In a Fox News interview, Trump dismissed claims that midterm elections influenced his stance: "People say I want to get it over because of the midterms – not true." This contradicts his earlier prediction in February that hostilities would last four to six weeks after the conflict began on February 28.

Ghalibaf emphasized Iran's position during a parliamentary session, stating any ceasefire must address "maritime blockades holding the global economy hostage" and Israel's military activities. He warned that serious violations could prevent the critical Strait of Hormuz from reopening to commercial traffic.

Analysts suggest these developments signal hardened positions, with the conflict increasingly impacting global energy markets and regional stability. Diplomatic efforts are expected to intensify ahead of planned peace talks later this month.
