Lai Ching-te’s Flight Denial Highlights Global Backing for One-China Principle

Several countries' refusal to grant overflight permits to Taiwan region leader Lai Ching-te for a planned trip to Eswatini underscores widespread international adherence to the one-China principle, Chinese officials stated on Wednesday, April 22. Zhang Han, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office, emphasized that the decision by nations along Lai's intended route reflects a recognition of Beijing's sovereignty claims over the island.

"We express appreciation for the stance and actions of relevant countries in upholding the one-China principle," Zhang said during a press briefing. "This reaffirms that the principle is a fundamental norm in international relations."

The Chinese Foreign Ministry separately noted that 53 African countries and the African Union have consistently reiterated support for Beijing's position, recognizing Taiwan as an inalienable part of China. Eswatini remains the only African nation maintaining formal ties with the Taiwan region.

Lai, who advocates policies Beijing views as separatist, had planned to attend celebrations marking Eswatini's King Mswati III's 58th birthday. Analysts suggest the flight permit denials signal growing diplomatic alignment with China, particularly among developing economies.
