China-Africa Summit Unveils New Era of Trade & Innovation in Addis Ababa

The inaugural China-Africa Entrepreneurs Summit kicked off on April 23, 2026, at the African Union (AU) headquarters in Addis Ababa, marking a transformative moment for cross-continental economic collaboration. Over 500 delegates from government, business, and diplomatic circles convened under the theme 'Deepening Practical China-Africa Cooperation and Embarking on a New Journey for Development.'

A Framework for Shared Growth

AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf highlighted Africa's position as a 'future engine of global growth,' emphasizing synergies between Africa's resource wealth and youth demographic and China's industrial expertise. He praised China's zero-tariff policy for 53 African nations, urging accelerated investments in value-chain development.

Operationalizing the African Continental Free Trade Area

Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie underscored the AU's free trade zone as a catalyst for 'business flourishing in the present, not the future.' He called for public-private partnerships to drive innovation, envisioning a 'multi-layered model' rooted in mutual respect.

Unlocking Tariff-Free Access

Jiang Feng, head of the Chinese Mission to the AU, announced the expansion of zero-tariff measures to all tariff lines for qualifying African exports starting May 1, 2026. 'The Chinese market will become a gateway for high-quality African products,' he stated, outlining priorities in agriculture, renewable energy, and digital infrastructure.

Private Sector Momentum

Li Qingyong, president of the China Chamber of Commerce to Africa, urged businesses to align with Africa's industrialization goals while tapping emerging sectors like green technology. The launch of the China-Africa Entrepreneurs Partnership Alliance formalized commitments to actionable outcomes, with AU officials pledging rigorous follow-up mechanisms.
