Belgium Urges EU to Suspend Israel Trade Deal Over Lebanon Actions

Belgium has called for the European Union to suspend its preferential trade agreement with Israel, citing "unacceptable" military conduct in Lebanon. Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot emphasized the need for a firm response during a meeting with EU counterparts in Luxembourg on April 23, 2026, stating that Israel’s "disproportionate and indiscriminate" actions risk destabilizing the region.

Prevot acknowledged that a full suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement faces opposition but urged at least partial measures. His stance aligns with Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who similarly demanded an end to the pact. However, EU members are reportedly divided on the issue.

The push follows a December 2025 European Citizens’ Initiative, which gathered over one million signatures to halt the agreement amid allegations of Israeli human rights violations. UN experts recently echoed these demands, warning that continued trade undermines the EU’s credibility on human rights.

Critics argue Israel’s military campaigns in Lebanon and Gaza, including alleged civilian targeting and infrastructure destruction, violate international law. The EU has yet to issue a formal response, but pressure mounts as diplomatic tensions escalate.
