US Immigration Custody Deaths Reach 17 in 2026, Report Shows

Seventeen individuals have died in US immigration custody between January and early April 2026, according to data released by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The fatalities mark a continuation of concerns over detainee welfare, following 33 deaths reported in 2025—the highest annual toll in over two decades.

The most recent case occurred on April 12, when a 27-year-old Cuban national was found unresponsive at a Miami detention center. Resuscitation efforts failed, and the cause of death remains under investigation. This follows 11 custody deaths recorded in 2024.

As of early April 2026, ICE detains over 60,000 immigrants nationwide. While this figure has decreased in recent months, it remains substantially higher than pre-2025 levels, coinciding with policy shifts under the current US administration.

Advocacy groups have repeatedly called for improved detention conditions and medical care protocols. The latest statistics are expected to reignite debates about immigration enforcement practices as global attention remains focused on human rights standards.
