Russia Condemns US Hormuz Blockade as Illegal, Warns of Escalation

Russia has sharply criticized the United States' naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, calling it a violation of international law that risks destabilizing global energy markets. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated on April 17, 2026, that Washington's actions represent a "unilateral and illegitimate measure" exacerbating regional tensions.

Zakharova accused the U.S. and Israel of "unprovoked aggression" against Iran, claiming their military actions since February have paralyzed Persian Gulf shipping and disrupted agricultural and industrial operations worldwide. The remarks follow U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's warning earlier this week that America would strike Iranian infrastructure unless Tehran accepts unspecified terms.

Iranian media reported earlier this month that over 3,000 people have been killed since hostilities began on February 28. While the White House maintains its blockade aims to pressure Iranian leadership, analysts warn the strategy could trigger broader economic repercussions as 30% of global oil shipments pass through the strategic waterway.

With negotiations reportedly stalled, regional powers are urging third-party mediation to prevent further escalation. The developments come as energy prices hit 2026 highs, with Brent crude surpassing $120 per barrel this week.
