India Power Plant Blast Death Toll Rises to 19, Probe Underway

The death toll from Tuesday's boiler explosion at a Vedanta Limited power plant in India's Chhattisgarh state has risen to 19, with 17 others injured, authorities confirmed Wednesday. The incident at the London-listed company's Sakti district facility marks one of India's deadliest industrial accidents this year.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai announced a state-level investigation, pledging "strictest possible action" against those responsible. Vedanta Resources Chairman Anil Agarwal separately committed to a "high-level investigation," stating the company would "leave no stone unturned" in determining the cause.

The blast comes amid heightened scrutiny of industrial safety standards in India, particularly in energy infrastructure projects. Analysts suggest the incident could prompt renewed discussions about workplace safety protocols as the country continues expanding its power generation capacity.
