As Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez concludes his official visit to Beijing this week, a vibrant symbol of Spain-China cooperation emerges 8,000 kilometers west – Madrid's Usera district is undergoing a €12 million cultural transformation celebrating its Chinese heritage.
The project, completed this month, features a striking 15-meter dragon sculpture overlooking a new 1.5km riverside path connecting Usera's bustling commercial hub to Madrid's recreational trails. The mythical creature – spanning 285 square meters – forms the centerpiece of a playground designed for intercultural interaction, complete with climbing walls featuring Chinese puzzle patterns and trampolines shaped like lunar craters.
"This isn't just urban renewal – it's a bridge between civilizations," said project architect María López, noting the 290 newly planted cherry trees and 500kg marble panda sculpture that now grace the Manzanares riverbank. The development includes a traditional páifāng gateway mirroring those in London and New York, while street installations feature wisdom from Confucius alongside Bruce Lee's iconic "Be water" philosophy.
The upgrade comes as bilateral trade between Spain and the Chinese mainland reached €52 billion in 2025, with cultural exchanges growing 18% year-on-year. Local business owner Li Wei, whose family has operated in Usera since 1999, told KhabarAsia: "For our children playing under the dragon's shadow, this neighborhood will forever symbolize how East and West can build beauty together."
