The World Health Organization (WHO) has provided an updated count of hantavirus cases linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship, revising the total to 10. This adjustment follows the result of a previously inconclusive case in the United States, which has now tested negative.
Tragically, the outbreak has resulted in three deaths. According to the WHO, the virus identified is the rare Andes strain. Health experts clarify that while this specific strain can spread between humans, such transmissions occur only in limited instances following close and prolonged contact.
In a move to prevent widespread alarm, the agency emphasized that this outbreak is not comparable to the scale of COVID-19 and does not pose a pandemic threat. The situation remains contained and is being managed according to global health protocols.
Currently, the MV Hondius is sailing toward the Netherlands. Upon arrival, the remaining crew members are expected to undergo and complete a mandatory quarantine period in accordance with Dutch health procedures to ensure the safety of the public and the crew.
