A multinational evacuation operation is currently underway in Tenerife, Spain, as passengers begin disembarking from the expedition cruise ship MV Hondius following a localized hantavirus outbreak.
The evacuation process involved transporting passengers ashore via small boats. From the coast, travelers were transitioned to dedicated flights to return to their respective home countries, with significant groups returning to the United States and the Netherlands.
According to reports from Reuters, citing the World Health Organization (WHO), the health crisis on board has seen eight people fall ill. Of these, six cases of hantavirus have been confirmed and two remain suspected. Tragically, three of the affected individuals have died.
While the situation on the vessel has been critical, health officials have reassured the general public that the risk to the wider population remains low. However, due to the nature of the virus, all passengers are being treated as high-risk contacts. Those returning home will be subject to strict health monitoring or mandatory quarantine periods to prevent further spread.
This incident serves as a reminder for global travelers and expedition cruise enthusiasts to remain vigilant regarding health protocols when visiting remote regions, as authorities continue to investigate the source of the outbreak.
