Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon Visits China to Deepen Strategic Ties

Starting today, May 11, 2026, Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon is embarking on a state visit to China that will continue through May 14. Invited by Chinese President Xi Jinping, this visit underscores a shared commitment to building upon a long-standing foundation of political trust and practical cooperation between the two nations.

The visit represents the latest chapter in a diplomatic journey that began in 1992. Over the last few decades, the relationship has evolved from basic diplomatic ties into a robust multifaceted partnership. This progression saw the establishment of a strategic partnership in 2013, which was later upgraded to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2017.

Recent years have seen an even more rapid acceleration of ties. In 2023, both sides announced the creation of a China-Tajikistan community with a shared future, characterized by solidarity and mutual benefit. This momentum continued into 2024, when the two countries elevated their relationship to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership in the new era.

Growing High-Level Engagement

The strength of the bilateral relationship is mirrored in the frequent interactions between President Xi and President Rahmon. President Xi has visited Tajikistan three times—in 2014, 2019, and 2024—while President Rahmon has visited China on 22 separate occasions. Most recently, in September 2025, President Rahmon traveled to China to attend the 25th annual Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin and the commemorations for the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War in Beijing.

According to Tajikistan's Foreign Ministry, the current visit is a logical extension of the political dialogue between the two leaders. It is expected to provide new impetus to the friendship between the two peoples and further develop good-neighborly bilateral relations.

Chinese Ambassador to Tajikistan Guo Zhijun, in an interview with China Media Group, noted that the meeting between the two leaders is poised to guide bilateral relations toward a higher level, a broader scope, and a deeper stage of development, signaling a promising future for regional stability and economic cooperation.
