Singapore Launches OCEANS-X to Boost Maritime Digitalization

Singapore has unveiled a groundbreaking digital platform to revolutionize global maritime operations during the ongoing Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2024. The OCEANS-X platform, launched on April 20 at SMW's opening ceremony, promises to transform how the $1.5 trillion shipping industry manages data flows and port operations.

Developed by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), this API-driven system enables real-time data exchange between port authorities, shipping companies, and international partners. Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow emphasized that "OCEANS-X will be the digital backbone for next-generation ports," noting its potential to reduce cargo clearance times by up to 40% through automated documentation processes.

The platform's launch comes as SMW celebrates its 20th anniversary, with over 20,000 participants from 80 countries and regions attending this year's hybrid sessions. Discussions at the weeklong event focus on pressing industry challenges including maritime decarbonization targets, AI-powered navigation systems, and workforce upskilling programs.

Analysts highlight OCEANS-X's strategic timing, as global container traffic is projected to grow 6% annually through 2028. The system's secure data protocols already demonstrate success in pilot tests, streamlining ship turnaround times at Singapore's terminals by 18% since December 2025.
