Elon Musk’s Terafab Chip Project Demands ‘Light Speed’ from Suppliers

Elon Musk's team has reportedly urged semiconductor equipment suppliers to accelerate efforts for his ambitious Terafab chipmaking complex, aiming to establish silicon manufacturing capabilities by 2029. According to Bloomberg, suppliers including Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron, and Lam Research received urgent requests this month for pricing and delivery timelines on advanced fabrication tools.

The project, first proposed by Musk in March this year, seeks to create a vertically integrated foundry through collaboration between Tesla, xAI (acquired by SpaceX), and newly joined partner Intel. Sources indicate Samsung Electronics Co. has also been approached for technical support.

Industry analysts note the accelerated timeline reflects growing competition in AI chip development. Terafab's success could reshape Asia's semiconductor supply chain, with Japanese and South Korean manufacturers of photomasks, etching systems, and testing devices playing crucial roles.

While Musk's ventures typically attract global investor attention, this move comes as governments across Asia ramp up domestic chip production incentives. The 2029 operational target aligns with projected surges in demand for AI-optimized processors.
