Uganda Cranes’ Morocco Friendlies Cancelled: Coach Paul Put Expresses Disappointment

The Uganda Cranes' preparations for upcoming international competitions have hit an unexpected snag. Head coach Paul Put has expressed his deep disappointment following the sudden cancellation of two scheduled international friendly matches in Morocco.

The national team had already touched down in Marrakesh, gearing up for high-stakes friendlies against Tanzania, scheduled for tomorrow, June 5, and Madagascar, set for June 8. However, the excitement turned to frustration when the matches were called off on Wednesday evening.

According to a statement released by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), the decision was made based on "sanitary and public health considerations," as communicated by the relevant authorities via the team's match agents.

For Coach Paul Put, the timing of the cancellation is particularly frustrating. He emphasized that these matches were not merely exhibition games but critical tools for assessing player form and fostering team chemistry. "This is a big disappointment because I cannot test players," Put stated. "I had contacted some players for a long time and this time they had come for these matches and unfortunately these matches can't happen."

The setback comes at a pivotal moment for the squad. With the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign slated to begin this September, the coaching staff viewed the Morocco trip as a vital stepping stone for early preparation and tactical refinement.

As the team navigates this unexpected turn of events, the focus now shifts to finding alternative ways to maintain momentum and ensure the Uganda Cranes are battle-ready for their official qualifying journey in a few months' time.
