The French Open witnessed a stunning upset this week as China's Zheng Qinwen suffered a shock first-round exit. In a match that defied expectations, Zheng fell 6-4, 6-0 to Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska, the World No. 114.
A Tough Battle in Paris
Zheng, who had previously displayed strong form at Roland Garros—reaching the quarterfinals in 2025—struggled to find her rhythm from the start. While she showed resilience in the first set, fighting back from a 4-1 deficit to level the score at 4-4, the momentum shifted abruptly. A sudden collapse saw Zheng lose eight consecutive points, handing the set to Chwalinska 6-4.
The second set proved even more challenging. The Chinese athlete was unable to halt her slide, losing six straight games as Chwalinska dominated the court. The match concluded in just one hour and 30 minutes, with Zheng committing 32 unforced errors compared to just five from her opponent.
Analyzing the Defeat
Speaking with the media after the match, Zheng took full responsibility for the outcome, stating that the loss was a result of her own performance on the court rather than her coaching team. She highlighted the difficulty of handling Chwalinska's excellent topspin, which bounced higher than anticipated.
"I had a tailored tactic before the match, but her topspin was bouncing much higher than expected," Zheng explained. She noted that the court dimensions played a role, limiting her ability to adjust backward and even resulting in an accidental collision with a line judge.
Looking Ahead
This defeat marks the earliest departure from the French Open in Zheng's career across five appearances. Having missed several matches last summer due to injury, the 23-year-old is now projected to fall outside the world's top 100 after failing to defend her quarterfinal points from last year.
Despite the pain of the loss, Zheng remains optimistic about her future. "This is a very painful defeat for me, but perhaps it can give me a different perspective and help me to come back stronger next time," she shared. As she evaluates her next steps, Zheng acknowledged that she may need to restart her climb through lower-level tournaments to regain her form.
