Senegal's political landscape has been plunged into a state of uncertainty following a significant rift at the highest levels of leadership. Former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has announced that his ruling Pastef party will not participate in the newly appointed government of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, signaling a deepening division within the country's ruling coalition.
The announcement came just as Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô was preparing to unveil a new cabinet. The move highlights a growing disconnect between the presidency and the Pastef party, which has been a central force in the nation's recent political shifts.
In a detailed social media post, Sonko explained that a recent meeting with President Faye failed to bridge critical gaps regarding the future direction of both the government and the party. While acknowledging some common ground, Sonko emphasized that the disagreements were too significant to overlook.
"Some points of agreement were indeed confirmed, but also, above all, points of disagreement," Sonko stated, confirming that Pastef would not be represented by any ministers in the current administration.
Despite the decision to distance the party from the executive branch, Sonko expressed his hopes for the new government's success. However, the absence of the Pastef party from the cabinet is likely to create challenges for President Faye's administration as it seeks to implement its agenda amid this internal political turmoil.
