Diplomatic Tension: Colombia and Bolivia Trade Expulsions of Diplomats

In a sudden escalation of diplomatic tension, Colombia has expelled the charge d'affaires of the Bolivian embassy, responding to a similar move by the Bolivian government.

Colombia's Foreign Ministry announced the expulsion of Ariel Percy Molina Pimentel on a reciprocal basis. This decision followed Bolivia's request for Colombian Ambassador Elizabeth Garcia to conclude her diplomatic mission and leave the country.

The rift was triggered by remarks made by Colombian President Gustavo Petro regarding Bolivia's internal unrest. The government in La Paz described these comments as interference in its domestic affairs, leading to the current diplomatic fallout.

In response to the accusations, the Colombian Foreign Ministry clarified that no official or member of the Colombian government had sought to interfere in Bolivia's internal matters. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to the principles of sovereign equality, non-intervention, self-determination, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

Despite the current friction, Colombia expressed its continued willingness to support initiatives aimed at promoting peace, political dialogue, and the protection of human rights, provided such support is requested by the Bolivian government and conducted in accordance with international law.

Emphasizing the historical depth of their relationship, the ministry noted that Colombia and Bolivia have maintained friendly bilateral ties for over a century and remains committed to keeping diplomatic channels open to resolve the current impasse.
