China and Russia Launch “Years of Education” to Strengthen Academic Bonds

In a significant move to bolster intellectual and scientific ties, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the opening ceremony of the China-Russia Years of Education today, Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

During his address, President Xi emphasized that educational cooperation between the two nations has deepened significantly over the years. He noted that these efforts have yielded notable results, further enriching the "comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era."

President Xi urged both sides to utilize the "Years of Education" initiative to build a stronger consensus, expand existing areas of cooperation, and elevate the overall quality of academic exchange. A key priority highlighted by the Chinese leader is the deepening of cooperation in talent cultivation and the joint tackling of challenges in frontier science, which are expected to drive innovation and development in both countries.

Beyond science and technology, President Xi stressed the importance of mutual learning between civilizations. He called for the exchange of educational governance experiences and the continuation of traditional friendships to foster deeper mutual understanding and stronger bonds between the peoples of the two nations.

President Vladimir Putin, currently on a state visit to China, described the launch of the initiative as having "milestone significance." He affirmed Russia's readiness to work closely with China to enhance understanding among the younger generations, ensuring that the legacy of Russia-China friendship is passed down and bilateral relations continue to flourish.
