China and Laos Strengthen Ties Amid 65th Anniversary Celebrations

As 2026 marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Laos, both nations are seizing what Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi calls 'important opportunities' to deepen their strategic partnership. The Year of China-Laos Friendship has become a focal point for advancing cross-sector collaboration, with high-level discussions held this week in Beijing.

Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met on April 23 with Lao Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith, who arrived as a special envoy of Lao leader Thongloun Sisoulith. The talks emphasized strengthening institutional dialogues and upgrading the China-Laos Economic Corridor – a flagship Belt and Road Initiative project.

'Enhancing railway connectivity quality and efficiency remains our shared priority,' Wang stated, highlighting plans to expand whole-industry-chain cooperation in minerals, energy, and human resources development. These efforts align with Laos' goals for economic transformation and industrial modernization.

Saleumxay affirmed Laos' commitment to maintaining close high-level exchanges, pledging to 'deliver more tangible outcomes' through joint infrastructure projects and anniversary celebrations. Both sides also discussed enhanced coordination on regional affairs, building on China's recent mediation efforts in Southeast Asia.

With the China-Laos railway now operational for four years, analysts predict this anniversary year could see new cross-border trade agreements and expanded digital economy partnerships, particularly in renewable energy sectors where both nations have complementary strengths.
