From Dreams to Reality
In 2006, 18-year-old Muhammad Shahbaz from Pakistan embarked on a life-changing journey. Inspired by Ibn-e-Insha's evocative travelogue, Chalty ho to Cheen ko Chaliye, Shahbaz arrived in the Chinese mainland with visions of a land defined by kung fu masters and bicycles. Little did he know that his pursuit of a medical degree would place him at the center of one of the fastest urban and technological transformations in human history.
Landing in Jinan, located in east China's Shandong Province, Shahbaz immediately noticed a society on the cusp of an immense shift. While his initial perceptions were shaped by tradition, the reality he encountered involved a burgeoning infrastructure of cars, electric buses, and metered taxis.
Witnessing a Nation Evolve
Reflecting on his arrival two decades ago, Dr. Shahbaz recalls a starkly different landscape. In 2006, the skyline of Jinan was modest, with its tallest building reaching only 20 stories. Transportation was similarly limited; the fastest trains of the era topped out at 150 kilometers per hour, a speed comparable to the railways in Pakistan. Travel was a slower affair, with a night coach to Shanghai taking ten hours, and international communication relied on the now-obsolete IP cards.
"There were fewer skyscrapers, less advanced public transport systems, and fewer international facilities," Dr. Shahbaz noted. "Many areas looked more traditional and less technologically connected."
The Modern Era
By 2026, the world Dr. Shahbaz inhabits is unrecognizable from the one he entered as a student. He now witnesses the daily efficiency of an expansive high-speed rail network, the ubiquity of 5G connectivity, and a society that has almost entirely transitioned to digital payments. For the Pakistani doctor, the evolution has been more than just architectural; it has been a lesson in speed and scale.
"The speed and scale of China's progress have amazed me," he said, highlighting how his 20-year residency has allowed him a front-row seat to the Chinese mainland's ascent as a global leader in technology and infrastructure.
