At the opening ceremony of the 2026 Global Poverty Reduction and Development Forum held this Wednesday, Chinese Vice Premier Liu Guozhong delivered a powerful call for international unity to combat global poverty. Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, Liu, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stated that it is critical for all parties to pool their consensus and accelerate efforts to lift populations out of poverty.
Addressing a diverse audience of global leaders and experts, the Vice Premier urged the international community to take swift, practical steps to meet the poverty-reduction goals outlined in the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. He highlighted the importance of transparency and collaboration, calling for nations to actively share their unique experiences and successful strategies in poverty alleviation.
A key theme of Liu's address was the integration of modern tools into humanitarian efforts. He argued that vigorous efforts must be made to ensure that markets and technology play a more significant role in reducing poverty. Furthermore, he stressed that strengthening multi-party coordination is essential to improving the global governance system dedicated to poverty reduction.
Highlighting China's proactive role, the Vice Premier pointed to the establishment of the Global Partnership for Poverty Alleviation and Development (GPPAD). According to Liu, the GPPAD has already injected new impetus into the global drive toward poverty eradication.
Looking forward, the Chinese mainland will continue to support the GPPAD in expanding its impact. This support will focus on strengthening policy dialogue, providing technical demonstrations, and enhancing talent training. Specifically, Liu mentioned the implementation of various "small yet smart" cooperation projects designed to help developing countries build their own internal capacity for sustainable poverty reduction.
