China’s Wang Yi Calls for Lasting Gulf Peace and Closer Ties with Indonesia at UN

In a series of high-stakes diplomatic engagements in New York, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has underscored China's commitment to global stability, calling for an immediate and durable ceasefire in the Gulf region and pledging deeper cooperation with Indonesia.

Seeking Peace in the Gulf

On Tuesday, May 26, while attending a UN Security Council high-level meeting, Wang Yi met with Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani. During their discussions, Wang emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire in the Gulf region, stating that the ongoing conflict has no reason to drag on.

As a dedicated partner to the Gulf nations, China expressed its sincere hope for a swift return to peace and tranquility. Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, urged the international community to double its efforts toward de-escalation and voiced strong opposition to any actions that "fan the flames" of tension.

Furthermore, China signaled its support for mediation efforts led by Pakistan and other nations, pledging to coordinate closely with Bahrain and other Security Council members to ensure a political settlement is achieved.

Strengthening the China-Indonesia Partnership

Turning to regional collaboration, Foreign Minister Wang also held talks with his Indonesian counterpart, Sugiono. The two diplomats agreed to intensify high-level exchanges and strengthen multilateral coordination to address global challenges.

Wang highlighted the shared responsibility of China and Indonesia as representatives of emerging economies. He noted that both nations are essential in upholding the authority of the United Nations and injecting stability into a world currently marked by turmoil. This vision aligns with the goal of building a "community with a shared future."

In response, Foreign Minister Sugiono affirmed Indonesia's commitment to deepening pragmatic cooperation. He specifically highlighted plans to enhance cooperation in energy and mineral resources and pledged to provide a favorable business environment for Chinese enterprises to flourish in Indonesia.

Upholding the International Order

These meetings took place as Wang Yi presides over a high-level UN Security Council session focused on upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. By strengthening the UN-centered international system, China aims to foster a more inclusive and stable global landscape.
