Strengthening the Heart of Global Security
In a significant call for global cooperation, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged the international community to reject all forms of unilateral actions that circumvent the United Nations (UN) Security Council. Speaking during a recent press encounter, Wang emphasized that the Security Council must remain the cornerstone of the international collective security mechanism to effectively maintain global peace and security.
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, acknowledged that the Security Council has at times been absent during major hot-spot issues in recent years. He argued that to reinvigorate the United Nations as a whole, the international community must first reinvigorate the Security Council.
A Call for Justice and Equity
To achieve this revitalization, the Foreign Minister stressed that all members of the Security Council must prioritize the mission of maintaining peace and strictly adhere to the UN Charter. He cautioned against acting on selfish interests or fostering bloc confrontations, which only serve to undermine global stability.
A key pillar of China's vision is the enhancement of the voice of developing countries and small-to-medium-sized nations. Wang specifically highlighted the need for reform to address historical injustices faced by Africa, ensuring that the global governance structure is more inclusive and representative of the modern world.
Defining the Future of UN Leadership
With the selection of the next UN Secretary-General on the horizon, Foreign Minister Wang outlined China's specific criteria for the role. He noted that the next leader will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of UN reform and the practical interests of member states.
According to Wang, the ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications:
- Commitment to the Charter: A firm dedication to upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
- Proven Competency: Extensive diplomatic and political experience combined with strong coordination capabilities.
- Impartiality and Justice: The ability to uphold justice on major issues, with particular attention to the aspirations of developing countries.
- Operational Initiative: A drive to keep UN reform on the right track to increase overall efficiency and effectiveness.
Honoring a Legacy of Multilateralism
Concluding his remarks, Wang paid tribute to the outgoing UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He commended Guterres for nearly a decade of service, noting his unwavering devotion to multilateralism and his efforts to defend justice and uphold the authority of the United Nations—efforts that Wang stated have been widely recognized by the international community.
