China Reaffirms Commitment to Multilateralism and Global Governance at UN Security Council

In a high-level open debate at the UN Security Council, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi detailed the People's Republic of China's enduring contributions to the United Nations and its vision for a more stable, collaborative international system. Speaking on Tuesday, Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized China's active role as a permanent member of the Security Council.

The address comes as this year marks the 55th anniversary of the restoration of the lawful seat of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations. Highlighting a period of significant international transformation, Wang stated that China remains dedicated to upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

Promoting Peace and Development
Central to China's approach is the vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity. Foreign Minister Wang noted that amidst frequent global conflicts, China continues to promote peace and encourage diplomatic dialogue. A key example cited was the establishment of the Group of Friends for Peace on the Ukraine crisis within the UN platform, aimed at providing Chinese wisdom and efforts toward maintaining world peace.

Beyond security, China has focused heavily on economic empowerment. The Global Development Initiative has already mobilized over $23 billion in funds and supported more than 1,800 cooperation projects. The initiative has further delivered up to 10,000 capacity-building programs for developing countries and trained over 200,000 professionals, providing a significant boost to the Global South.

Global Health and Multilateral Responsibility
China's commitment to humanitarian aid was underscored by its response to public health crises. Recalling the full support provided to three West African countries during the 2015 Ebola fight, Wang announced that China is currently assisting the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda in responding to the present Ebola outbreak, with Chinese medical teams working on the ground.

To combat the headwinds facing multilateralism, China has stepped up its financial and institutional responsibilities. As the second largest contributor to the UN regular budget, China has utilized the China-UN Peace and Development Fund and the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund to support international goals.

Furthermore, China has initiated the International Organization for Mediation and the World Data Organization, and proposed the establishment of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization. China has also offered to host the Secretariat of the Agreement on Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction.

Looking Ahead: Global Governance Forum
Concluding his remarks, Foreign Minister Wang announced that China will host a forum on global governance in the Xiongan New Area in north China's Hebei Province this autumn. The event is expected to bring together friends from around the world to deliberate on the most pressing issues facing global governance today.
