Macao Surpasses 100 Million Cross-Border Passenger Trips in Early 2026

Macao has reached a significant milestone in travel and connectivity, with total cross-border passenger traffic exceeding 100 million trips in 2026. According to data released on Monday, May 25, by the Public Security Police Force (CPSP) of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), this target was achieved by the end of Sunday, marking a milestone reached 14 days earlier than in the previous year.

The surge in travel is evident across the region's primary checkpoints. The Border Gate checkpoint continues to be the most heavily utilized, recording more than 50 million passenger trips. Additionally, the Qingmao Port, Hengqin Port, and the Macao Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge have all shown strong growth momentum, with each surpassing 10 million passenger trips.

To keep pace with this increasing demand and further enhance the travel experience, the CPSP announced several strategic infrastructure and technology upgrades for the remainder of the year. A major focus will be on improving customs clearance efficiency to ensure a seamless flow of travelers.

At the Hengqin Port, capacity is set for a significant boost, with the number of passenger inspection lanes increasing from 69 to 113. Similarly, the Border Gate checkpoint will see the addition of 10 new inbound self-service clearance channels to reduce wait times.

In a move toward modernization, Macao is also expanding its iris-recognition clearance services. This technology, which offers a faster and more secure transit process, will be gradually extended to include eligible groups such as university students and non-resident workers, reflecting the region's commitment to leveraging smart technology for urban mobility.
