Heavy rainfall has caused significant disruptions in the Chinese mainland, with torrential rains striking the Yongchuan District of Chongqing Municipality this weekend.
Local authorities confirmed on Sunday, May 24, 2026, that one person has died and 17 others remain missing following the extreme weather event. Rescue operations are currently underway to locate the missing individuals and provide aid to affected areas.
According to reports from the meteorological department, the heaviest precipitation occurred between late Saturday night and the early hours of Sunday. Two specific areas were hardest hit: Guankouwan logged a staggering 296.7 millimeters of rain, while Hanjiagou Village recorded 256.9 millimeters.
Meteorological experts have warned that because these storms followed previous rounds of heavy rainfall, the soil is saturated, significantly increasing the risk of geological disasters. Authorities are on high alert for landslides, collapses, and debris flows that could further endanger residents.
In response to the crisis, Chongqing officials activated a Level-III emergency response for geological disasters in the Yongchuan District starting at 7 a.m. on Sunday to coordinate relief efforts and ensure public safety.
