The China Manned Space Agency announced today, Saturday, the crew designated for the upcoming Shenzhou-23 manned mission to the space station. The mission will be led by Commander Zhu Yangzhu, accompanied by astronauts Zhang Zhiyuan and Lai Ka-ying.
The Shenzhou-23 crew marks a significant milestone as the first team composed of astronauts from both the third and fourth batches. In a testament to the growing capabilities of the program, one of the crew members is scheduled to remain aboard the space station for a full year.
Commander Zhu Yangzhu brings an impressive track record to the lead role. Having previously served as the spaceflight engineer for the Shenzhou-16 mission, Zhu makes history as the first spaceflight engineer to be appointed as a mission commander, and the first astronaut from the third batch to assume this leadership position.
Joining the mission is Zhang Zhiyuan, also a member of the third batch of astronauts, who will be embarking on his first journey into space.
The mission also features a groundbreaking addition in Lai Ka-ying. As the first astronaut from China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Lai has been selected as a payload specialist. She is the first member of the fourth batch to participate in a Chinese space mission and the first female payload specialist selected from China's Hong Kong and Macao SARs. Like Zhang, this will be Lai's first voyage into orbit.
The selection of the Shenzhou-23 crew underscores the expanding diversity and specialized expertise within China's space program, bridging different astronaut batches to enhance the operational goals of the space station.
