In a recent high-profile interview in Beijing, International Boxing Association (IBA) President Umar Kremlev expressed strong confidence in the trajectory of boxing within China. During his visit as part of a Russian delegation, Kremlev highlighted the country's increasing influence in the sport and the strategic potential for enhanced China-Russia cooperation through athletic excellence.
Kremlev outlined an expansive roadmap for the sport, emphasizing plans to bring more international boxing events and development programs to the Chinese mainland, specifically targeting cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, as well as the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions.
"China is like a home country to me," Kremlev remarked, noting the region's immense potential to host prestigious international tournaments and create new pathways for local athletes to excel on the global stage.
The IBA is currently exploring the feasibility of hosting World Championships and professional boxing events in China. Beyond the ring, the focus is shifting toward sustainable growth. Reflecting on the sport's journey, the IBA President praised the legacy of former Olympic champion Zou Shiming, who he credited with proving a decade ago that China is a true "boxing nation." He noted that today, the sport is evolving rapidly in both amateur and professional spheres.
Beyond athletics, Kremlev underscored the diplomatic importance of sports exchanges between China and Russia, suggesting that such collaborations contribute to global balance and stability. He concluded with a message of empowerment for young Chinese boxers, describing the sport as a powerful tool for personal growth and upward mobility.
