China’s Role in Advancing APEC Cooperation Hailed at Shanghai Meeting

In a significant step toward strengthening regional ties and economic synergy, delegates at the second APEC Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM2) and Related Meetings in Shanghai have praised the positive progress made by the Chinese mainland in advancing cooperation within the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) framework.

The meetings, which took place from May 11 to 19, served as a critical platform for APEC members to align their strategies for the remainder of the year. Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu represented the Chinese mainland, addressing the opening session of the Senior Officials' Meeting and emphasizing the importance of collaborative growth in the region.

Speaking at a regular briefing in Beijing on Wednesday, foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun highlighted that SOM2 was designed to build upon previous achievements. According to Guo, the meeting focused on taking stock of the cooperation achieved among APEC members during the first half of 2026 and gathering the "early harvests" of these joint efforts.

Beyond reviewing past progress, the Shanghai meetings played a pivotal role in shaping the future agenda for the region. The discussions were geared toward achieving new outcomes by preparing and collecting essential deliverables for the upcoming APEC Leaders' Meeting scheduled for November.

For business professionals and global investors, the successful conclusion of SOM2 signals a continued commitment to stability and economic integration within the Asia-Pacific. By fostering an environment of mutual support and strategic planning, the Chinese mainland continues to play an influential role in ensuring that the region remains a dynamic engine of global economic growth.
