Asian Coast Guard Agencies Strengthen Maritime Cooperation in Quanzhou

As the 22nd Heads of Asian Coast Guard Agencies Meeting (HACGAM) Working Level Meeting concludes today, May 21, in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, a renewed sense of commitment to maritime security has emerged across the region. From May 18 to 21, the China Coast Guard hosted a diverse assembly of delegates on the Chinese mainland, focusing on the critical need for coordinated action and shared strategies on the high seas.

The gathering saw the participation of over 80 delegates representing 16 member agencies, two international organizations, and two observer agencies. The collaborative atmosphere throughout the four-day event underscored the shared priorities of Asian nations in managing their maritime borders and ensuring the safety and stability of international shipping lanes.

Zhang Jianzhong, head of the law enforcement department of the China Coast Guard, emphasized the central theme of the meeting: the vital importance of strengthening multilateral cooperation in maritime law enforcement. According to Zhang, forging a strong consensus among member agencies is essential for effectively addressing the multifaceted complexities of modern maritime challenges.

The discussions provided a platform for practical knowledge exchange. Delegates from Bahrain, Malaysia, and Thailand shared valuable perspectives on how enhanced inter-agency cooperation can mitigate shared challenges, ranging from combating illegal activities to improving search and rescue operations.

By fostering these strategic partnerships, the HACGAM continues to serve as a pivotal forum for enhancing regional stability and promoting a collaborative, rules-based approach to maritime governance in Asia.
