Harmony with Nature: Xizang’s 75-Year Journey of Green Development

A Legacy of Balance and Growth

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the peaceful liberation of Xizang, a milestone that reflects more than just the passage of time, but a sweeping socio-economic transformation. Over the past seven decades, the region has experienced a development miracle—often described as "striding millennia in just a few decades"—while steadfastly refusing to compromise its ecological integrity.

Preserving the Roof of the World

Xizang's commitment to the harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature has positioned its environment among the finest globally. Today, the region boasts 47 nature reserves and nine national forest parks, with over 50% of its land area placed under special ecological protection. The results are tangible: water purity in major rivers and lakes remains high, and grasslands are thriving.

Perhaps most striking is the growth of the region's greenery. Forest coverage, which stood at less than 1% in 1951, has risen to 12.5% today. This achievement is the result of a long-term, "protection-first" strategy that integrates the systematic management of mountains, rivers, forests, and deserts through a blend of natural restoration and human-led rehabilitation.

Turning Ecology into Opportunity

Xizang is now successfully transforming these ecological strengths into sustainable economic benefits. The culture and tourism sector has seen remarkable growth; according to reports from the 2026 culture and tourism work conference, the region welcomed more than 70 million visitors in 2025.

Beyond tourism, Xizang is diversifying its economy through emerging sectors such as clean energy and the digital economy. By leveraging the inherent value of its "lucid waters and lush mountains," the region is expanding its capacity for self-sustained development, proving that environmental stewardship and economic prosperity can go hand in hand.
