New Era of Cooperation: South Korea Expands Investment in Western China

As the economic landscape of Asia continues to evolve, a new chapter of collaboration is unfolding in the heart of the Chinese mainland. Chongqing has announced that the 8th Western China International Fair for Investment and Trade (WCIFIT) will take place from May 21 to 24, marking a significant milestone in regional diplomacy and economic integration.

For the first time, South Korea's Gyeonggi-do will serve as the guest city of honor. This designation underscores a strategic pivot and a deepening of ties between South Korea and western China, signaling a phase of cooperation that transcends traditional trade hubs.

The momentum is backed by robust economic figures. China remains South Korea's largest trading partner, export market, and primary source of imports, while South Korea maintains its position as China's second-largest trading partner. According to data from the General Administration of Customs of China, bilateral trade in goods reached a staggering $331.2 billion in 2025, providing a solid foundation for further expansion.

Political will has been a key driver of this economic synergy. In January 2026, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung conducted his first state visit to China since assuming office. Accompanied by a high-level economic and trade delegation of approximately 200 representatives, President Lee emphasized the importance of easing misunderstandings and building a partnership rooted in shared development. He noted that the rapid technological and economic advancements within the Chinese mainland have pushed bilateral collaboration into a "new era."

A focal point of the upcoming WCIFIT will be a dedicated economic and industrial cooperation promotion event hosted by Gyeonggi-do. As the most populous province in South Korea and a global epicenter for high-tech industries, Gyeonggi-do brings immense strategic value to the table. The region is a powerhouse for semiconductors and electronics, hosting global industry leaders such as Samsung, SK Hynix, and LG.

By bridging the industrial strengths of Gyeonggi-do with the growth potential of Chongqing and the broader western region of the Chinese mainland, the 8th WCIFIT is poised to create new opportunities for investors, tech innovators, and business professionals across the region.
