Magnitude-5.2 Earthquake Strikes Liuzhou, Guangxi: Two Dead, Elderly Man Rescued

A magnitude-5.2 earthquake struck the Liunan District of Liuzhou City in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region early Monday morning, prompting an immediate and large-scale emergency response.

The seismic event occurred at 12:21 a.m. today at a depth of 8 kilometers. Local earthquake relief headquarters confirmed that as of 11:10 a.m. on May 18, 2026, two people have died. The disaster initially left three residents missing, triggering an urgent search and rescue operation involving emergency services, fire departments, and police authorities.

Amidst the tragedy, a story of survival emerged when rescue teams successfully located a 91-year-old man trapped at the site. Medical teams confirmed he is in stable condition, and he has been transported to a hospital for further care.

In response to the crisis, Guangxi's regional earthquake relief headquarters launched a Level-III emergency response at 2 a.m. This was supported by the China Earthquake Administration, which also activated a Level-III response to coordinate the aftermath.

At the national level, the office of the State Council earthquake relief headquarters and the Ministry of Emergency Management activated a Level-IV emergency response. A specialized work team has been dispatched to the affected area to provide critical support to local relief efforts and ensure the continued safety of the region's residents.
