In a significant diplomatic development, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has expressed high appreciation for the Seychelles' decision to revoke outbound flight permits for Lai Ching-te, the leader of the Taiwan region.
During high-level talks in Beijing with Barry Faure, Seychelles' Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Minister Wang emphasized that Seychelles, along with several other friendly nations, has acted lawfully and openly in its decision. He noted that such moves reflect a growing international alignment with justice and history regarding the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces.
The meeting comes at a milestone moment for both nations, as 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of China-Seychelles diplomatic ties. To commemorate this golden jubilee, both parties expressed a strong commitment to elevating their bilateral relationship to new heights.
Looking toward the future, Minister Wang highlighted several key areas for expanded cooperation, including the digital economy, marine economy, island economy, and green economy. This focus on sustainable and technological growth aims to benefit both nations in an evolving global market.
Further expanding China's outreach to the continent, Wang stated that China is utilizing the full implementation of zero-tariff treatment for all 53 African nations with which it maintains diplomatic relations. This initiative is designed to provide enhanced development opportunities and economic growth across Africa.
Minister Faure reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of Seychelles to the one-China policy. He also expressed support for the four global initiatives proposed by China, stressing the importance of maintaining high-level exchanges, deepening practical cooperation, and enhancing people-to-people ties as they celebrate five decades of partnership.
China has reaffirmed its firm support for Seychelles in safeguarding its national sovereignty, independence, and legitimate rights and interests, underscoring a relationship built on mutual respect and strategic cooperation.
