In a briefing to the press on Friday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi detailed the outcomes of a high-profile meeting between President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump in Beijing. The discussions, characterized as "historic" and "fruitful," focused on reshaping the trajectory of China-US relations and addressing critical global challenges.
A Strategic Blueprint for Stability
The two leaders engaged in nearly nine hours of candid and constructive communication, encompassing formal talks, a welcoming banquet, and a private session. According to Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, the interaction was marked by mutual respect and a shared commitment to peace.
The cornerstone of the meeting was the agreement on a new vision: building a constructive bilateral relationship of strategic stability. Wang explained that this vision is designed to provide strategic guidance for the next three years and beyond, based on four key pillars:
- Cooperation as the Mainstay: Strengthening the resilience of ties through active exchange.
- Moderate Competition: Rejecting zero-sum games where one side wins at the expense of the other.
- Manageable Differences: Ensuring relations remain steady rather than fluctuating volatilely.
- Enduring Peace: A commitment to preventing conflict, confrontation, or war.
Economic and Diplomatic Momentum
To translate this strategic vision into action, both nations have agreed to enhance cooperation in diplomacy, military affairs, and law enforcement. On the economic front, trade and investment teams will work toward expanding two-way trade under a reciprocal tariff reduction framework. Furthermore, the two sides agreed to establish a trade council and an investment council to address mutual concerns regarding market access for agricultural products.
Cross-Strait Peace and Global Security
Addressing the Taiwan question, Wang Yi emphasized that it remains China's internal affair. He stated that the Chinese side expects the United States to adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques. Wang noted that safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is a common goal, adding that the US side indicated an understanding of China's position and does not accept Taiwan moving toward independence.
Beyond bilateral ties, the leaders discussed urgent international crises. China urged the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to sustain ceasefires and encouraged the United States and Iran to resolve disputes, including nuclear issues, through negotiation. Regarding the Ukraine crisis, both nations expressed a desire for an early political settlement and pledged to maintain open communication to help restore peace.
