In the vibrant city of Ganzhou, east China's Jiangxi Province, a simple sport is fostering unexpected friendships and breaking down cultural barriers. From May 8 to 11, the 2026 China-US Friendship Pickleball Event brought together young athletes from the United States and the Chinese mainland, proving that sports can truly be a universal language.
For Wesley Gabrielson, captain of the Oregon Friendship Pickleball men's team, the experience was transformative. Partnering with Wang Yue, a PE teacher from south China's Guangdong Province, Gabrielson found that they didn't need a shared language to coordinate their plays. Using simple phrases and hand gestures, the duo forged a connection that transcended words.
"It's just been a great experience overall," Gabrielson shared. "This is my first time in China, and everyone here brings such warmth. Seeing China is totally different from hearing about it. A lot of my previous impressions have been refreshed after coming here."
The event featured a diverse group of participants, including players from Utah Tech University and the Oregon Friendship Pickleball Delegation. Ella Boydston, a student from Utah Tech University, noted that the beauty of the surrounding environment added to the experience. "It's very green here. Seeing the mountains and trees while playing – it's pretty unforgettable," she remarked.
This gathering is part of a larger effort to enhance youth connectivity. It traces back to April 2025, when 44 teachers and students from 13 US schools visited the Chinese mainland under President Xi Jinping's "50,000 in Five Years" initiative. The program aims to bring 50,000 young Americans to the Chinese mainland for exchange and study programs over a five-year period.
The initiative has already seen tangible results. Following their 2025 visit to Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Beijing, the US delegation expressed their gratitude to President Xi, who replied noting his pleasure that pickleball has emerged as a new bond for youth exchanges between the two nations.
As the 2026 event concluded, it left behind more than just scores on a scoreboard; it cultivated lasting friendships and a renewed understanding between the youth of the US and the Chinese mainland, highlighting the power of athletic diplomacy in an increasingly interconnected world.
