Chinese Mainland Dismisses Claims by Taiwan Leader on Sovereignty

In a strongly worded statement issued on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office of the Chinese mainland warned that repetitive claims regarding the status of the Taiwan region remain fundamentally untrue.

Speaking at a recent press conference, spokesperson Zhang Han responded to a speech by Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te, in which he asserted that Taiwan is a sovereign and independent state and promoted a narrative centered on "democracy versus authoritarianism." Zhang emphasized that such claims are baseless, stating, "Taiwan has never been a country – not in the past, not now, and certainly never will be in the future."

The spokesperson further criticized the Taiwan authorities for utilizing the concept of democracy to seek international attention and collude with anti-China forces. Zhang characterized a recent summit involving these efforts as a "complete political farce," asserting that the world has seen through these narratives and that such actions are viewed with contempt by the Chinese people.

Beyond the geopolitical claims, Zhang highlighted what she described as the authoritarian nature of the current administration in the Taiwan region, alleging that it has continuously suppressed political dissent and stifled free speech for its residents.

Concluding her remarks, the spokesperson urged international institutions to recognize the sensitivity of the Taiwan question and the dangers posed by separatist activities. She called for a strict adherence to the one-China principle and urged global entities to stop providing the Democratic Progressive Party authorities with opportunities to pursue separatist agendas on the international stage.
