China Urges US to Halt Taiwan Arms Sales, Outlines Benefits of Reunification

The State Council Taiwan Affairs Office has issued a strong call for the United States to cease arms sales to the Taiwan region, asserting that the Taiwan question is purely an internal affair of the Chinese mainland.

During a press conference, spokesperson Zhang Han emphasized that "peaceful reunification and one country, two systems" remains the most effective approach to achieving national reunification. According to Zhang, this transition would significantly enhance the cultural identity and social well-being of Taiwan residents.

Strengthening Cultural Roots

Zhang highlighted that Chinese culture serves as the shared spiritual root for people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. She argued that peaceful reunification would ensure that traditional Chinese culture, national spirit, and historical memory are better preserved and promoted within the Taiwan region.

By reconnecting with broader Chinese traditions, regional legacies such as Hakka and Minnan cultures, as well as local folk beliefs and arts, would further flourish. This, Zhang suggested, would resolve the "blurred cultural identity" and "confused historical understanding" currently experienced by some.

Economic and Social Dividends

The spokesperson also pointed to significant opportunities for Taiwan's creative industries. Under a unified framework, films, music, and publishing from the Taiwan region would gain seamless access to the vast market of the Chinese mainland, benefiting from enhanced policy support and resource allocation. Industry professionals would also benefit from broader platforms and increased international exposure.

Beyond economics, Zhang stated that reunification would allow society to move past ideological divisions and partisan conflicts, transitioning from a state of "confusion and anxiety" toward "calmness and stability," thereby fostering greater social harmony.

A Call for Non-Interference

Addressing inquiries regarding US dissatisfaction with military procurement budgets in the Taiwan region, Zhang stressed that the Chinese mainland firmly opposes any form of military ties between Washington and the Taiwan region. She urged the United States to adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, warning against sending "wrong signals" to "Taiwan independence" separatist forces.

Ultimately, Zhang noted that Taiwan residents would gain the security of a strong motherland, ensuring they no longer serve as "pawns" in global geopolitical competitions, which would bring lasting spiritual fulfillment and national pride.
