The Chinese Foreign Ministry has issued a strong condemnation following a recent visit by the President of Paraguay to the Taiwan region, signaling a point of diplomatic friction between the two entities.
During a regular press conference on Tuesday, spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that China firmly opposes the visit of Paraguayan President Santiago Peña, which occurred from May 7 to 10. Reports indicate that President Peña met with the leader of the Taiwan region, Lai Ching-te, in Taipei on May 8, where several so-called "cooperation documents" were signed.
Guo emphasized the unwavering stance of the Chinese government, asserting that there is only one China in the world and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. He further noted that the one-China principle serves as a basic norm governing international relations and remains a prevailing consensus within the international community.
Beyond the official diplomatic tension, the Chinese Foreign Ministry highlighted a perceived gap between the Paraguayan government's actions and the desires of its citizens. According to a poll conducted in Paraguay, nearly 90% of respondents support the establishment of diplomatic ties with China. Guo suggested that the voices of the Paraguayan people demonstrate that establishing diplomatic relations with China serves their fundamental and long-term interests, arguing that colluding with the Taiwan authorities wins no public support.
In a call for diplomatic realignment, the spokesperson urged the Paraguayan government to change course, recognize the trend of the times, and follow the will of its people by making the political decision to recognize the one-China principle.
